ASA deems smart ad not to be misleading
04 February 2009
The ASA has decided that there is nothing misleading about an advert for the smart car.
There is nothing misleading in the smart advert which suggests the vehicle can drive to London to Edinburgh on a single tank of fuel, it has been determined. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled that the television advert is sufficiently supported by evidence from Mercedes-Benz, as well as figures from the VCA.
In the advert, the two-seater is a shown in a time-lapse sequence completing the 433 mile trip on one tank of fuel.
Dermot Kelly, managing director at Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "We're delighted that the ASA has vindicated our position, on what is a very solid environmental and economical message, and decided to reject the complaints.
"The television ad demonstrated that a drive from London to Edinburgh is proven to be well within the capabilities of the smart fortwo on less than one 33 litre tank of fuel."
Channel Four stated in a review of the smart fortwo that it is "safer than other two-seater microcars", while being easy to park in crowded cities.
