The Ford Focus RS500 limited edition was sold out 12 hours after it was revealed, even though prices have not yet been announced.
This extraordinary event occurred despite the carmaker being forced to reveal the model earlier than intended, meaning dealers werent aware it existed, a Ford insider said.
A Web site was designed by Ford to tease the cars unveiling for several days. The new car was supposed to be globally launched at the Leipzig Motor Show on April 9th, but the site was hacked and pictures of the car were released early.
From that moment on people were literally walking into dealers or calling them up and placing orders for the car, the insider said. However, because we had to quickly bring the cars launch forward we hadnt even briefed the dealers on its existence. It led to some quite confused phone calls between dealers and head office.
The company is now checking out customers expressions of interest to secure allocations for dealers, before the opening of order books next month.
The insider also said most of the interested customers were from the UK, but confirmed the new model will be available across all of Europe. He further noted that the interest was heightened by the standard cars residual values. The car is selling second hand for more than its normal new purchase price.
The Ford Focus RS500 is a 500-car limited run of the hot hatchs 345bhp version.
Built to commemorate the end of the production line for the Focus RS, it has more torque and power than the standard RS and an upgraded interior.
