Honda Motors will be axing the fire-breathing Civic Type R in the UK as the engine fails to meet emissions regulations.
Production of the Civic Type R is due until October 2010, with sales ending by December. The powerful 2.0-litre VTEC engine of the car is to blame as it falls foul of the upcoming Euro-V emissions regulations.
Instead of re-engineering the car to meet the standards, which will come into effect for all new vehicles starting January next year, Honda decided to end the production of the Type R and replace it by a brand new model when the new range of Civic arrives in late 2011.
Since January 2007, more than 12,000 Civic Type R units have been sold in the UK, and though the last units will be sold before the year ends, the Swindon plant of Honda will continue to produce the car for South African and Australian markets.
To celebrate the end of this Type R generation, Honda is launching a new offer for all Civic Type R customers, to coincide with the latest rounds of the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship). The event takes place in Silverstone on 22 August, and the carmaker will provide an exclusive Type R Only Car Park, 'Dreamfields' hospitality and the chance to experience the Northamptonshire circuit's 'Lap of Honour' race during the day.
For customer who crave for one of Honda's 'Red H-badged' hatches, there is never been a perfect time to snap up a bargain. The Type R GT now only costs £19,495, a sizable discount of £2,230. And with the new PCP finance offer of 5.9 percent, a Type R could only cost as low as £235 per month, with a 30 percent deposit. The offer covers the Type R LSD, Type R MUGEN 200 and Type R GT models, and runs until 29 September.
