Mazda Motors UK has issued a request to perform a free precautionary safety check on the power steering system of some Mazda3 and Mazda5 units sold in the country. The models affected have been built between April 2007 and November 2008.
According to Mazda, it has 10,268 potential vehicles affected by the problem, namely the Mazda3, propelled by 2.0-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel, and the Mazda5, powered by 2.0-litre and 1.8-litre petrol engines. So far, only two incidents of steering problems have been recorded, but no injuries or accidents associated with the issue have been reported.
A Special Service Programme will be performed to affected cars to check for possible residual particles left in the power steering pipes that could cause the hydraulic power assistance system as well as its electric pump to overheat and shutdown. Besides a steering malfunction indicator lamp will be illuminated and a harder time to park and manoeuvre in small spaces, nothing will happen to the vehicle. The steering system’s mechanical components remain fully functional, allowing the car to be driven safely even with the absence of power assistance.
The Japanese carmaker is playing it safe and said will start the campaign in October.
In such cases, repair works will be carried out at Mazda dealerships and services free of charge to the customer. Fixing power steering system is estimated to take 90 to 110 minutes, depending on the model.
