Small vehicles could help combat congestion

New research has discovered that increasing the number of small vehicles on roads could decrease congestion.
Encouraging the use of more small cars on London's roads could be an alternative approach to reducing congestion in the capital, it has been stated.Automotive brand smart has encouraged London mayor Boris Johnson to consider using smart cars as a way of combating congestion, following new research.
Capital Symonds carried out field tests comparing small vehicles to more conventional medium-sized cars.
The results discovered that three smart fortwo vehicles are able to pass through a set of traffic lights in the same time as two general cars, potentially holding up fewer drivers in traffic jams.
Dermot Kelly, managing director of Mercedes-Benz UK, said: "We've suggested to the mayor that he could improve traffic congestion in London by encouraging the use of space-efficient cars, like the smart fortwo.
"The fortwo's exceptional fuel economy, reduced CO2 emissions and the fact you can park two smarts in the space of one regular car, can only be positive news for the capital."
Meanwhile, the Advertising Standards Authority recently concluded that a television advert suggesting that a smart fortwo could drive from London to Edinburgh on a single tank of fuel was not misleading.
