Pushing the Boundaries

Driving a Bentley would be a dream in itself, what more if you were driving a Bentley that's more powerful and more aggressive? Aside from the muscle and power, the new Bentley Continental Supersports runs on a reduced weight, revised transmission, improved chassis stiffness, and firmer suspension.

The Continental GT and the Continental GT Speed are both powered by a twin-turbo W12 engine and they have 552bhp and 600bhp respectively. But in the Continental Supersports, they further pushed it to 621bhp. That power belongs to a rare level and breed of cars but it's not the power that makes this beauty amazing, it's the torque. The 6.0-liter engine can generate a huge 800Nm of torque, thanks to its twin turbochargers, and reach to 1,700rpm all the way to 5,600rpm. Added to that is a Quickhisft version of Bentley's six-speed automatic gearbox with gear charges that are 50 percent faster, it has been especially strengthened and lives up to its name.

With its outside appearance, one can already deduce its power and speed. But the styling is not for aesthetic purposes only; they are made to make the car reach its optimum potential. There is a twin bonnet vents that permits hot air to flow away from the engine. To supply the turbochargers with the extra air needed the large frontal intakes make it possible. It has a wider rear wheelarches to accommodate the improved and extended rear track; its self-leveling air suspension is lower and has stiffer bushes. At only 2,240kg it is 330kg lighter than the Continental GT Speed, this was possible due to the use of aluminum and carbon fiber parts around the car.

With this power, appearance and weight, we are able to conclude that this car is much faster than most of the cars we have driven or even seen. From a zero-mph speed, it goes to 60mph in 3.7 seconds- 0.2 seconds faster than the Audi R8 V10. It will burst through 100mph in 8.9 seconds. If you drive at a sedate 50mph then suddenly step on it, it will got to 70mph in 2.1 seconds. It has a maximum speed of 204mph.

Even though this car was built to go fast, it still has to keep an eye on its impact to the environment. Manufacturers have to think of a way that's going to lessen its economy and carbon footprint. So this model was designed to run on any mix of petrol and E85 Bioethanol. Bioethanol is carbon neutral because it is from a plant; it would then take away or lessen the car's 388g/km carbon dioxide emission or its 17.3mpg. The car is equipped with a special sensor that would detect the mix of ethanol and petrol being used so that the parameters of the engine would be properly used. But allowing a 200mph Bentley to run on E85 bioethanol may be such a small, insignificant thing, at least they're trying.

Bentley's are dream cars and share with the spotlight with only few select groups. This particular car starts at an amazing £150,000 on the road. But to be able to drive these cars then you must posses money much more than a few hundred thousand.
