Sportscar is fast. Sportscar is expensive. Sportscar is not good for the environment. Sportscar uses so much non-renewable energy. Sportscar this. Sportscar that. Here we go with our assumptions. Maybe it's because we liked to be proven wrong all the time. Check out the new BMW 118d Coupe.
Powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine tuned to achieve 143bhp with 350Nm of torque in a car weighing 1,400kg sounds a little confusing, added to that is a turbocharger. It can go up to 60mph from standstill in 9 seconds flat and has a top speed of 130mph. It rides on double-joint spring strut suspension at the front with a five-link arrangement at the rear. The DSC dynamic stability control is a staple in 118d and before reining in the throttle the traction control component of the system allows a degree of wheel slip. The air intakes are more aggressively shaped than the hatchbacks but the frontal area, particularly the nose, has some similarities with the hatchback. It is 133mm longer than the original hatchback and the protruding rear and widescreen emphasizes this difference. The available space is at 320 liters, 20 liters more than the hatch. The major controls for the entertainment and ventilation system are just there near the steering wheel readily available to the driver. This is useful especially if driving alone and you need to adjust the temperature or lower the volume of the stereo.
Same as the usual weight distribution, the 118d Coupe is at 50:50. The outline of the car is more like the 3 Series Saloon and Coupe than the 1 Series ranges where it belongs. That is why many costumers are not endeared with its appearance. The interior of the car boasts of high quality materials and solid construction and it brings a classy feel rather than being outlandish. They put quite an investment with this but it is a well spent money.
There is a range of trim levels to choose from though they do not posses something new. The top of the line M Sport has styling accessories that changes the appearance of the car. Costumers get the extra 17? alloy wheels, front fog lights, heated mirrors, a leather steering wheel and sports seats. The standard model is cheaper but then it does not posses the amenities and perks of the others. The safest or the best deal you can find is when you choose the Sport model.
What makes this Coupe stand out is that no superminis, even the 1.3 and 1.5-liter diesel engines can atch the fuel economy of the 118d Coupe at 62.8mpg combined and a carbon dioxide emission of 119g/km. This in itself is amazing. having a sportscar without the feeling of constant guilt over environmental degradation and worrying over the running costs of these things.
For safety equipment it has the standard twin front, side and head airbags, ABS and DSC stability system. It would probably fit most garages with the dimensions numbered at 4360 mm, 1748mm, and 1408mm as its length, width and height, respectively. Most users rated it at three stars while the comfort would seem a little on the negative side. It's quite small and it was not built for practicality and comfort.
