Putting Sport into Sport Utility Vehicle

Our Rating: No Rating Available

Over the years car manufacturers have loosely tossed around the word ?sport? when talking about SUV. When most people think about the word sport they think of action, moving, fun. When they think of the word sport when it comes to vehicles they think of Formula 1, Motocross or NASCAR. When people think of a Sport Utility Vehicle if most people where honest they would think of family of four, a dog and running errands. Finally there is an SUV on the market that actually puts the Sport Utility Vehicle.

BMW has released the X1 that helps put the sport into the owner's daily commute. If we are being honest most people who drive SUVS don't drive them for the sport, they drive them to get from point A-B. And if you have to get from point A-B you might as well drive a vehicle that makes you feel less ho-hum and more yea-hay!

The BMW X1 comes it both a rear wheel drive version as well as a 4x4 version. The rear wheel drive gives you a much sporty drive on your daily errands. The 4x4 will give the peace of mind to drive on any terrain, in any weather at anytime.

Drivers will get the choice to two different engine types for the rear-wheel drive models and three engine choices for the all-wheel drive versions. The first option is the sDrive 18d with 143bhp for the rear-wheel vehicles and the xDrive 18d for the 4x4 models. The next step up is the sDrive20d and the xDrive20d for the rear-wheel drive and the 4x4 respectively which offers 177bhp. The top producing engine is the 204bhp xDrive23d which comes complete with twin turbochargers. The xDrive 23d comes standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. This version also comes with an optional sport automatic transmission with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.

Inside the X1 is nicely appointed as it is across the board with the entire BMW line. Those people looking for something a little bit more sexy inside can opt for the design package. This upgrade includes leather seats, Anthracite headliner and a sophisticated wood grain trim. The buy can also choose between 2 different navigation options both of which incorporate the iDrive interface. The new version has slightly easier to navigate controls.

One of the nicest things about all the X1 models is that they run on diesel power which means that they all boost great gas mileage in the range of about 53mpg combined city and highway. This means less stopping for gas and an overall cheaper running cost for the car.

The overall appeal for the X1 is the combination of the nice design, ability to use the vehicle for a multitude of purposes and the overall value you get for the quality. On top of the lower gas costs the car the X1 will run a buy only about 30,000 pounds. For a luxury car that acts as a true sport vehicle the X1 is almost a steal.
