Corvette - A Fascinating Sports Car

Our Rating: No Rating Available

The Chevrolet Corvette is fascinating for many reasons, but the most basic reason is that it has come a long way from its original design. It is smaller, lighter, and many think it is classier as well. It is certainly as powerful as it needs to be to claim status as a top-notch sports car, and now it has brains to back up the brawn.

The Corvette of the past was focused on aggressive styling. That included an extra large size compared to other sports cars. This made it heavier, harder to maneuver and harder to handle than European sports cars. Now the Corvette C6 has been stripped of a great deal of excess weight. It also has more elegant styling than it ever had before. The Corvette has always been a favorite among its fans, but with a new, lighter and sleeker body it is gaining a wider following.

One thing the Corvette C6 has is power. It has the ability to zoom from 0 to 62mph in just 4.4 intense seconds. It then drives out to a top speed of 186mph. The 6.2-liter V8 engine roars to life on command, and in time, the car brings out a full 575Nm of torque. It has a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The sports car driving purist will probably want the manual, but the automatic is also well-built with paddle shift to increase control and performance.

A sports car should be made for speed, power and agility, and the new Corvette C6 meets those criteria more than Corvettes of the past have done. There are a few negative points, but they are the same drawbacks that are inherent in nearly all sports cars. The fuel consumption is high; the Corvette C6 only gets 21.2mpg in the combined cycle. In town driving efficiency can be as low as 14.3mpg in a well-maintained Corvette C6. The CO2 emissions are also high, at 316g/kg. However bad these figures seem, they are not out of line with most cars of the class and better than some.

The Corvette C6 does have some safety features as well. There are safety belts and airbags, of course, but there are also antilock brakes, a tire pressure monitoring system, a traction control system, and the Active Handling system. These safety features do not take the fun out of the drive, but do take away some of the real danger of driving at high speeds.

Comfort in a Corvette C6 is fairly good. The seats are fully adjustable, including 6-way power driver's and passenger seats and lumbar support. A Driver Information Center helps the driver personalize the car and program trips. Dual zone air conditioning is also included as standard.

The Corvette C6 has plenty to recommend it. It is outstanding in power, torque, and agility. Now that the body style is sleeker and more refined, it can bring Chevrolet many customers that would have never come before. There are numerous features that give the driver a thrilling experience behind the wheel of a Corvette C6, and all at a price that is lower than many other sports cars that compete with it. The Corvette C6 is truly a smart purchase for many.
