For a long time Hyundai sold a decent amount of their more than competent Amica. However you look at it the Amica did quite well. It sold well, people seems to enjoy driving it and it helped create a decent amount of brand loyalty which is sure to help Hyundai keep these entry level owners as the move up the car chain.
Hyundai is replacing the Amica in the supermini category with a car they are calling the i10. Hyundai is hoping to avoid the pitfalls that have harmed many car companies. The i10 is a good car all around, but Hyundai has avoided putting too many gadgets into the car. They simply made a car with everything that a driver who buys a city car needs. Not necessarily what they want, but most certainly what they need.
The engine that we will discuss today is the 1.2-litre petrol powered engine that is one of the several options available in the i10. The 1.2-litre drives on 76bhp of power. This may not be the most powerful engine available, but it delivers decent numbers for a car of this class. The 1.2-litre engine will get from 0-60mph in 12.8 seconds and top out on the speed chart around 102mph. Torque on the engine comes in at 118Nm which is more than most cars in the class. It may not have the best acceleration, but the car has good pep at speed and it perfect to get around town.
The exterior style falls somewhere between the overly stylized and a box on wheel. As usually Hyundai isn't going to win any design awards, but what it does offer is sure to please many people. After all not everyone in the UK wants a car that looks like a racecar. Some people just want simple, practical styling. They i10 is curvy where it should be curvy and square where it needs to be square.
Inside the i10 is simple for the most part. Hyundai has made the cabin rather normal looking, but they have focused a lot of attention on designing the car for safety as oppose to just show. All the i10s come with four airbags and anti-lock brakes. The only fancy thing on the inside is the dash mounted gear-shift that affords a little more room at the middle of the car. The i10 comes standard with air-conditioning, remote locking system and electric windows up front.
Trim choices for with the 1.2-litre under the bonnet include either the Comfort or Style options. Both options come standard with a host of good equipment including air conditioning. The Comfort level trim comes with 140inch alloy wheels, power door mirrors, remote locking system and front fog lamps. Upgrade to the Style level and the alloys grown an inch to 15 inches, an electric sunroof is added and a rear spoiler gets added as well. All levels come with the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty.
There may be better superminis on the market for people who like an interior full of gadgets, but for the most part the i10 cannot be beat as an overall value. The combination of a good ride, decent engine and excellent fuel consumption make this the must have car for anyone looking for an entry level vehicle. This car will get a wide audience that includes university students, commuters and young families.
