A Hybrid Car on Speed

Our Rating: 8 / 10

The Infiniti M35h might just be the Infiniti model that finally gets some serious attention from drivers in the United Kingdom. The M35h is a hybrid of electric and petrol systems that effectively joins previous models from the M lineup. The Infiniti M35h is by far the fastest such model that has been seen from this line so far, able to go from zero to 62 miles per hour in just 5.5 seconds, and is also the greenest and cleanest of the line thus far as well, emitting just 162g of CO2 emissions per kilometre.

Speed is one of the big pluses here. There are four modes to choose from – Eco, Normal, Snow, and Sport – and all of them give a real acceleration surge when the throttle is floored thanks to that combination of the V6 engine and the electric motor.

Sadly, the sporty performance sets a standard that other aspects of the vehicle, primarily the steering and reactions, which are fairly lifeless and slow, just fail to succeed in living up to. Another unfortunate note is added by the lack of wheel-mounted paddles, meaning that the gearbox cannot be operated manually. Given that the car changing the ratios itself can be a rather ponderous activity has to register as another disappointment.

It is very far from being all bad news when it comes to the Infiniti M35h, however, with perhaps the biggest appeal of the vehicle being that it is actually capable of running on electric power alone. This means that if the car is caught in slow moving traffic, for example, it can simply move along quietly in EV mode without the engine even having to be engaged. Battery power on its own can actually have the Infiniti M35h moving up to 60 miles per hour – the engine is required in order to get up to that speed but once there the car can continue at that speed while producing absolutely no carbon emissions at all.

The Infiniti M35h is also the first such hybrid car to have a sound synthesiser fitted. The sound synthesiser is fitted behind the front air intakes and is provided as a sort of safety feature – because when running on electric the car will be very quiet indeed, the sound synthesiser is there to make certain that no one, such as other cars and pedestrians in particular, will be caught unawares of the arrival and presence of the Infiniti M35h.

Certainly, there are some problems here and it might be easy to see the Infiniti M35h as something of a mixed bag. To dismiss it as such, however, would be to overlook its generally fine performance and genuinely impressive fuel economy. It costs £1,180 more than the M30d diesel, but is much faster and will ultimately save a lot more money in the long run, thanks to its frugal nature and comes loaded with all the standard equipment that one expects from an Infiniti. If a consumer has made a decision to go for an M, then the Infiniti M35h is definitely the one that they should give the most serious consideration to.
