XF 3.0 Diesel: Class and Power

Our Rating: No Rating Available

Over the last several years people in Britain have wondered what has happened to their homegrown luxury brand Jaguar. The UK car maker was still around, but it was being minimized and beaten by all the German luxury brands at every level. While the German brands were re-thinking luxury style Jaguar seemed to be working on creating mediocre visuals that blended in with the likes of Chevy and Ford. The good news is that someone at Jaguar must have woken up one day with the realization that they worked for a car company that was built on being unique. With the introduction of the Jaguar XF the UK automaker has once again delivered an executive car that screams that it is a Jaguar.

The exterior of the XF is a blend of muscle and sporty which melds old-school Jaguar styling with new-school type looks. One of the coolest things about the design of the XF is the fact that it looks more like a coupe than a saloon. Inside the car it is very much a saloon because it can easily seat 5 adults comfortably. The boot offers excellent 540-litres of space for luggage and other things. The rear seats can be folded flat as well to allow for 420-litres of added space. Dimensions on the outside of the car come in at 1877mm wide and 2909mm long. Both these numbers make the XF larger than nearly all cars in the same class.

Under the bonnet Jaguar is offering a couple of petrol power plants as well as several diesel fueled engines. This article will focus on the 3.0-litre diesel options that the Jaguar engineers are offering. The first 3.0-litre diesel engine is a 236bhp that can get the driver from 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds. However the best numbers that the XF offers it the ability to get from 50-70mph in about 3.7 seconds.

The second 3.0-litre diesel engine on offer by Jaguar in the XF is a 271bhp power plant that betters the 0-60mph time mark of the smaller diesel by nearly a second. The overall 0-60mph time is 5.9 seconds while the 50-70mph time clocks in at 3.2 seconds. Both engines offer significant power for a diesel engine that is done by some interesting technology. Jaguar employs twin sequential turbochargers and a third generation common-rail injection system to create the power. Basically what happens is that there is one turbo running all the time while the second one kicks in around 2,800 rpm to help eliminate any of the traditional turbo lag.

Many drivers who choose a diesel under the bonnet do so for a mix of power and overall cost efficiency. Both options of the 3.0-litre diesel offered in the Jaguar XF get estimated 42mpg combined fuel consumption. Excellent numbers for a car with superior luxury and power. Petrol engines with this much power would put a huge dent in the owners wallet.

Jaguar executives can rest a little easier these days knowing that their new design team has returned the UK car maker to its roots and glory. The Jaguar XF 3.0 Diesel is a super luxury car that delivers exceptional power.

Jaguar XF Tests new 2.2 litre Diesel Engine

The British automaker has unveiled a new 2.2-litre diesel engine that delivers 190 HP.  Operating on the combined cycle, the engin...
