Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6: Power and Comfort

Our Rating: No Rating Available

Land Rover has always been viewed as a company that delivers vehicles that look rugged on the outside while actually being capable of handling tough situations under the hood and chassis. Lately the brand has started putting out vehicles that look a little more modern on the outside. The good news though is that they still work great in tough situations as shown by the new Discovery 4.

Under the bonnet the Land Rover Discovery 4 comes with a couple of choices that will help the bulky vehicle through anything a person can throw at it. The engine options start with the entry level 2.7-litre V6 twin turbo diesel which was available in the previous Discovery 3. This article will focus on the 3.0-litre Turbo Diesel V6.

The Land Rover Discovery 4 with the 3.0 TDV6 under the bonnet gets the power of 242bhp and can develop 600NM of torque at just 2,000rpm. The 3.0 TDV6 is not the fastest engine on the block with a sluggish 0-60mph speed of 9 seconds, but the power is what people really need in a vehicle like this and the 3.0 TDV6 delivers that in spades. This engine has the ability to get to 550Nm of torque off the line in a miniscule 500 milliseconds. These types of numbers are perfect for people who find that they are in muddy environments a lot or who routinely tow things behind the Discovery 4.

Land Rover has equipped the 3.0 TDV6 with a smooth shifting ZF 6-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox affords for a very nice ride on long trips. One the best parts about most of the Land Rover line is that they are built to handle tough terrains, but still drive exceptionally well on motorways and city streets. The steering is stiff yet nimble enough to handle tight turns and the air-suspension will handle mud pits and potholes equally well.

One of the most impressive things in any version of the Discovery that is also included n the Discovery 4 is a the Land Rover patented Terrain Response system. This is a system that allows the drive to use a rotary knob located on the console to choose from an array of terrain options. Options of terrain include several for conditions that include; grass, snow, gravel, mud/ruts, sand or rock crawl. Land Rover has updated the latest system to help with launches in conditions like deep sand, rock crawl and hill climb.

The Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 comes equipped with a load of technology that will be lost on most people. Land Rover has included a portable audio interface that will allow for an array of music players to be easily attached to the premium sound system. Oddly one of the neatest little innovations is the headlamps that can sense oncoming traffic and will dim the lights when needed.

As usual Land Rover has delivered a top of its class vehicle in the Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 that will hold on to the loyal followers well impress people new to the brand. Wouldn't it be nice if all car makers could keep this level of quality for so long a time?
