Normally when a car maker offers people the chance to drive and review one of their vehicles that offer up the top of the line version of the car in question. This is done to show-off the finer features on offer, but often does a disservice to buying public by creating a vision of the car that doesn't always match the reality. It also sometimes harms the car makers as well because it often puts the car too far out of range of the intended audience. That is why this article will focus on the entry level Mazda6 and not the top of the line trim level that was offered up.
The funny thing about the Mazda6 1.8 is that it may be the bottom of the trim and engine charts, but at the end of the day it may be the best level that company offers. When the low price is combined with the sporty little engine anyone would be hard pressed for a true need to buy anything more. The only reason one may chose not go with the 1.8 is due to the fact that Mazda only offers it as a 5-door hatch.
Power in the 1.8-litre is derived from petrol fuel that produces no fewer than 118bhp. Now that may not seem like a lot of power to move a mid-sized car like the Mazda6, but when you consider the car only weights 1,405kg it is plenty of power. In fact the car can get form 0-60mph in about 11.7 seconds which is faster than many of the other cars in the class.
The Mazda engineers have focused a lot of their attention on making sure the car feels and drives good. They have included a fully independent suspension and made a few changes to the older version to increase stability and overall grip. They have also made the car longer, taller and wider without adding any extra weight. They external re-design also allows for better aerodynamics which led to lower wind noise inside the cabin.
Trim levels on the Mazda6 1.8 include what the company calls the S and the TS. Both come well equipped with standard features includes 16-inch alloys, air conditioning, electric windows throughout and Dynamic Stability Control. Step up to the TS model and get climate control, cruise control, trip computer and leather on the steering wheel and the gear shift knob.
Fuel consumption numbers are good for a car this size coming in at an estimated 43.5mpg urban, 55.6mpg extra urban and 43.5mpg combined. CO2 emissions are also low with only 155grams per kilometer. These are excellent numbers consider ing this 1.8-litre is petrol powered under a mid-sized body. Safety features include twin front airbags, side airbags, traction control and anti-lock brakes.
Overall the Mazda6 1.8 will sell well to both families and fleets across the UK. It is a smart looking car that has everything a person needs to live their daily lives no matter if it is a daily commute or taking the kids back and forth to football.
