You know a car maker believes it has a winner when it releases a car line that has a wide array of options that range from entry level all the way up to near luxury appointments. Mazda has must believe in the 6 line because they have given buyers a ridiculous range of choices that include different body styles, excellent cost upgrades and no less than 5 engine options.
The first option a consumer must choose from is the body style where they get a 5-door hatch option of the Estate body. Both body types offer room for 5 regular-sized adults to sit comfortably with plenty of room in the boot area. The Mazda6 5-door hatch and estate come standard with 60/40 spilt seats that lay flat to allow for even more boot space at 1,702-litres. That number jumps to 1,751-litre in the estate models.
Mazda has also offered up a nice selection of power plants under the bonnet. The entry level option that may prove to be the most popular of the petrol engines is a 1.8-litre that produces no fewer than 118bhp. The car can get form 0-60mph in about 11.7 seconds which is faster than many of the other cars in the class. Mazda also offers up the 2.0-litre DISI petrol unit that produces 153bhp. This type of power can move the family sedan with the standard 5-speed transmission from 0-60mph in 10.3 seconds with a top speed of 134. If the 5-speed automatic is attached to the engine then it takes 11.2 seconds to ascend to 60mph off the line.
The final petrol option is an impressive 2.5-litre. The best part about the engine is that the Mazda engineers have found away to create V6 type power with a four-cylinder set-up. This engine option can get the car from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds. This get-up-and-go is achieved by the use of an electronic Multijet fuel injecting system combined with SVT Sequential-Valve Timing system.
The diesel choices come in the form of a 2.2-litre advanced common-rail diesel engine that includes a variable geometry turbocharger and high pressure fuel injector. These technologies allow for the car to get excellent response from the engine when needed, but also allows the engine to run efficiently when the driver is running along at a normal pace. The 2.2D can be had in power production of 128bhp, 161bhp and 178bhp. The smallest engine can get the car from 0-62mph in 10.9 seconds while the largest does it in 8.7 seconds. Those numbers put it at the top of the acceleration charts in the family car class.
Mazda is offering the 6 in four trim levels that are being called; S, TS, TS2 and Sport. The S option offers 16-inch alloys, air conditioning and power windows. Buyers who opt for the TS level get cruise control, a trip computer and dual zone climate control. If they chose to step it up to the TS2 Mazda tosses in 17-inch alloys, Bluetooth, parking sensors, front fog lamps and something called the Rear Vehicle Monitoring System which help notify the driver items in their blind spot. At the Sport trim level Mazda adds keyless entry, a bit of leather trim, B-Xenon headlights, some extra styling and a Bose stereo.
