Power and Drivability

Mercedes has been putting the AMG treatment on cars for the last bunch of years to great fanfare. The AMG versions have always had powerhouse engines under the hood, but often lacked in the drivability and suspension. Of course they were fast, but they were not easy to drive. The good news is that the new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG has been engineered to be both fast and fun to drive.
No good review of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG would start off with anything other than the power plant inside the car. With that in mind Mercedes has placed a powerhouse engine under the bonnet of the C63 that comes in the form of a 6.3-litre V8 that produces 457bhp max power at 6,800rpm. That top speed is mustered with the help of a turbocharger. Max torque measures in at 600NM at 5,000rpm, 500Nm torque can be had between just 2,000rpm and 6,250rpm. This engine is a direct relative of the engine used in the C-Class touring car in the German DTM race series. Mercedes has attached the engine to a AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic gearbox that comes with a paddle shift assembly on the steering wheel. Drivers can adjust the gearbox to three setting they call; Sport, Comfort or Manual.
The place the Mercedes has truly stepped up in this version of the C63 is the suspension and overall handling. This car not only can go fast it can maneuver like a pro as well. Many people complained that the lack of handling and suspension took all the ?sport? out of the car and simply made at expensive car that could only go straight. The modern C63 AMG utilizes a three link front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. They widened the front track by 35mm and the rear by 12mm. These added dimensions give the car a much more stable feel. They have also included ESP stability control system that can be adjusted down or turned-off completely if the driver so desires.
Brakes in the C63 AMG have also been tuned up to suit the powerful engine. There are ventilated discs on all four wheels. They have an intense bite when needed with 6 piston calipers in front and 4-piston calipers on the rear. They work with the ESP system to keep the driver safe no matter how they drive.
Mercedes has also pumped up the exterior look to make sure that people know the owner spend the extra pence on the top of the line sport model. The wheel wells have been poofed out and they have added two power domes on the bonnet to let the world know there is pure power under there. The car is also fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels, side skirts, four chrome exhaust pipes and a little boot lid spoiler. Inside the add-ons include a 3-point performance steering-wheel and a multi-adjustable driver's seat.
The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG has made some excellent advancement in the drivability front, but it will remain to be seen if it can beat the likes of the class leaders like the Audi RS4 or the BMW M3. It may not beat them just yet, but it is now a true contender.
