When car makers hit the design boards to create a citycar they are put into a position where they have to deliver a car that is both economical to build, affordable to buy and yet somehow still has people that actually want to buy it. Then of course if they succeed they are forced to stay current. That is exactly what happened with the Mitsubishi Colt. The original version was well received and seen as a car that was inexpensive to buy, cheap to operate and overall had a reliable build. Now with all the other ?sporty? superminis on the market the Mitsubishi is forced to deliver something even better.
Luckily, or maybe not so luckily, the executives at Mitsubishi were able to employ a design team that could infuse to new life and excitement into the latest version of the Mitsubishi Colt. Basically all they had to do was redesign the outside and make it a little more interesting looking and add a couple cool options to the line-up and bam, they are back to being relevant.
Under the bonnet of the Mitsubishi Colt is a range of engine choices that should please people looking for super economy or pep in their step. All the engine choices under the 3-door Colt are powered by petrol fuel and start out as a 1.1-litre 3-cylinder that produces 75bhp of power. The next step up the power plant ladder is a 1.3-litre engine that emits 95bhp with 4-cylinders. The final engine offered is a 4-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo that gives up to 147bhp when needed. All are fitted with a 5-speed manual that can be upgraded to a 6-speed Allshift automated manual.
Fuel consumption numbers are in-line with the rest of the cars in the class level. The 1.1-litre model averages and estimated 51mpg in combined driving, but the 1.3-litre engine with ClearTec technology can get an estimated 56mpg in combined. ClearTec technology includes, LED lights to save power, low resistance tyres and the Automatic Stop/Start system that cuts the engine off when stopped at a light or stuck in traffic.
Total measurements on the Mitsubishi Colt come in at just 3,870mm in length, 1,550mm in height and 1,695mm in width sat on top of a 2,500mm wheelbase. This combination coupled with the wheels being placed far and wide allows for maximum usable interior space as well. The Colt boasts the best legroom of the class thanks to the seating configurations. It also comes standard with a 40/60 split back seat that allows for more stuff to be carted around when needed. The passenger seat can also be folded forward to help with longer items as well.
