The brand new limited edition Smart For Two has been provided with a much classier cabin in what is a clear and transparent bid to try to improve on the appeal of the vehicle, despite the extra effort the old problems continue.

Our Rating: 4 / 10

If you were to pay attention on the next occasion that you are driving through just about any city centre in the whole of the United Kingdom, then you will be almost certain to make note of just how many Smart For Twos there really are driving around everywhere. For anyone who is looking for such a car that is a little more on the exclusive side, however, then the brand new Boxfresh Style model, which is extremely limited to just as few as 55 vehicles, could be precisely what they are searching for.

In a tie-up with the clothing designer Boxfresh, the Smart For Two has been given a quite extensive overhaul of its interior that includes the likes of “Cognac” leather on the dashboard, door panels and seats, as well as some carbon fibre style accents.

The Smart For Two Boxfresh model that was tested here is powered by the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine. It comes with a bhp rating of 70 and is able to give a nippy performance when driving around town, while also capable of providing a great deal of pace when flying down the motorway, whilst the CO2 emissions, which are just 99g per kilometre, mean that it is free from the additional cost of road tax.

The automatic gearbox on the Smart unfortunately continues to be a major drawback, however. The shifts continue to be frustratingly slow and in the midst of any more complicated manoeuvres such as the likes of three-point turns, it can sometimes become rather confused and will actually refuse to move out of neutral.

That being said, for all of those occasions where you will undoubtedly be cursing its many inherent weaknesses, you will almost certainly also find yourself just as grateful for the ability of the vehicle to be able to park in very small spaces and to nip through extremely tight gaps. There can be no doubt that the company really needs to do some very serious and extensive work on the uncomfortable ride and awkward driving position before anyone could seriously think of the For Two as being anything close to the ideal city car, however.

On the positive side, the price tag of £11,700 is certainly pretty good value, especially when you take into account the equipment included, with the likes of leather upholstery, Bluetooth, GPS and heated seats all being thrown in as standard.

The Boxfresh is without a doubt one of the classiest For Two vehicles on the road. The cabin is also a very luxurious place in which to spend some time and there are plenty of additional gadgets.

The bad news, however, is that driving the Smart For Two Boxfresh on rutted city streets in traffic that is constantly stopping and starting, very quickly becomes extremely tiresome. The Smart painfully crashes over potholes and then lurches through changes of gear, even as the driver struggles (and fails) to try to be comfortable in the extremely awkward driving position.
