The V60 T6 Polestar is the hottest estate ever released by Volvo.

Our Rating: 6 / 10

The Volvo V60 T6 Polestar is without a doubt one of the wildest estate vehicles which money can buy, particularly one from the company that is generally regarded as being one of the most sensible manufacturers in the entire world. It is also easily the most powerful vehicle that Volvo has ever unleashed on the market.

Nominally a fairly standard V60 T6, the new vehicle has had the normal 3.0-litre V6 engine receive a serious remapping courtesy of Swedish tuner Polestar, so that it now not only delivers a bhp rating of 329 – which is 29 bhp more than is given by the standard vehicle – but which also keeps the warranty firmly intact at the same time as well.

The car is able to go from 0-60 miles per hour in as little as 5.6 seconds, which is actually six tenths faster than the 0-60 miles per hour ranking of the standard T6 and is even on a par with the BMW 335i Touring.

However, while the engine has undergone a £645 upgrade, there seems to be very little changes made to the car, save from a small square badge positioned on the boot. The lack of any other alterations or upgrades ends up leaving the V60 T6 Polestar feeling and looking just a little bit confused, with the rapid acceleration and razor sharp response of the throttle now standing in pretty sharp contrast to the muted exhaust note, numb steering, and rather lazy automatic gearbox.

The only other part of the new car that seems to be at all in keeping with the very lively character of the remapped engine is the firm suspension, which controls the extremely large body tremendously well, though does have a rather unfortunate tendency to crash when going over big bumps. The Volvo V60 T6 Polestar is without much in the way of doubt a vehicle that is fun to drive, but this is a quirky model that probably has more appeal to the heart than it does to the head – and that may just not be enough to sustain it in the market.

Volvo has a long and proud history of making very fast estate vehicles – one only has to remember the 850R which the company brought to us back in the 1990s to realise that – and the Volvo V60 T6 Polestar is a clear and obvious attempt to follow in that heady tradition. However, while there can be very little to no doubt at all when it comes to the potency of the engine itself, the incredible straight line pace of the vehicle is just not matched by anything resembling sharp handling.

On the upside, the V60 certainly feels like it has been put together in a very robust fashion and is certainly stylish enough in terms of its aesthetic appearance. For those who really feel the need to spend their money on a top of the range T6 model, then they could certainly do worse than to spend £645 for the benefit of an additional 29 bhp, which seems to be pretty good value for money by the standards of just about anyone.
