Peugeot 207 Buyers Guide

Peugeot 207 may not be the top choice in its segment. But it is rather competent in a number of departments, and -- the most important part for a lot of new and used car buyers -- it is inexpensive to buy and run. Peugeot 207 carries a competitive price for its many advantages. Better still, owners will find that the car more than meets expectations in the long run. A number of pitfalls in design and feature may still give buyers cause for doubt. Otherwise, the 207 makes for a great drive.

Pros

Buyers will be happy to know that the Peugeot 207 is available with a number of engine options. The diesel variants are the best choice since they can save the owners a lot in terms of running costs. The model comes with a 1.4 litre HDi and a 1.6 litre HDi unit, which are lively around town and well capable in longer drives. The 207 feels stable and the handling is secure. Passengers won’t have any problem dealing with body rolls and comfort.

Owners of a Peugeot 207 will find the seats comfortable, making it possible for passengers to endure long rides with few problems. The rear cabin may be a little cramped for adults, but they can support children well. The boot may not be overly large, but compartments and holders more than make up for luggage requirements.

Safety is one of the best features of this model. The car received five stars from the Euro NCAP crash test. Some of its standard safety equipment include dual front, side and curtain airbags, two ISOFIX anchors, strong impact protection on the front and sides, remote central locking system, immobiliser and others. Two trim levels also come equipped with an electronic stability programme that ensures full traction on wet and slippery roads.

Personalisation is easy for buyers of a 207. This is due in part from an extensive range of equipment and accessories available in trim levels. A green version with low emissions called the Oxygo is especially built for those who are following an eco-friendly lifestyle. Those who aren’t particularly interested in a hatchback can also find convertible and estate versions available.

Cons

The petrol engine variants of the 207 may be nippy and economical, but they extremely lack refinement especially when the car is worked hard. Although powerful, they also don’t give as much a fun drive as the diesel variants can. In addition, the diesel units can be noisy outside the cabin. The five-speed gearbox is also awkward and disappointing.

Minor problems around the 207’s features may also make people think twice before purchasing a model. The stereo switches are flimsy, the foldable rear seats are a handful to fold, and the basic trim level is a bit on the stark side.

On the whole however, the 207 has more plus sides than bad. It may not be as recognised and praised as other cars in the segment, but buyers who are interested in small hatchbacks should still give this one a try.

A History of the Peugeot 207

The Peugeot 207 is a supermini introduced at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show and was produced from 2006 to 2012. The launch of the car coincided with a union boycott of PSA in the UK. Despite this, worldwide sales for the 207 reached 300,000 during its first year of production. Despite early criticism, the car was lauded for its styling, safety features and for its price. The 207 succeeded Peugeot 206 and was replaced by Peugeot 208 in world markets by 2012. It is still being produced in Malaysia by Gaya Motor since 2011.

The Peugeot 207 was revealed along with 3 more concept cars on its 2006 debut. The first is the 207 RCup, a Super 2000 version. The second is the 207 Epure revealed at the 2006 Mondial de l’Automobile, which was fitted with a hydrogen fuel cell. The third concept is the 207 Super 2000, which was used later in various motorsport rallies across Europe.

The 207 was based on a modified Citroen C3 platform. It comes in 5 body styles, and carries the PSA PF1 platform. An improved 207 cabriolet coupe version, 207 CC, was introduced in 2007. At the same year, a GTi with turbocharged engine was released. In 2009, the car received a facelift, including a new grille and updated software changes. 2000 units of Le Mans Series special edition was also produced by Peugeot.
