Renault Espace

Renault celebrated a great triumph when they unveiled their new vehicle in 1984. Displaying an original design conceived by British car designer Fergus Pollock in the 1970s, Renault Espace cars were the first in their class to exhibit the re-configurable seating and cargo space that defines the modern MPV.

The Renault Espace almost did not make it into the marketplace. Originally planned as a Knuttebasse with the intention of replacing the Matra Rancho, Matra took the design to PSA Peugeot Citroen and Peugeot declared it too risky and too expensive. Matra then shopped the design to Renault.

Matra manufactured generations one through three, even though they were sold under the Renault brand. Subsequently, Renault took over the full production of the long-wheelbase MPV with its seven passenger seating, increased rear leg and boot size. The fourth generation model, with its fibreglass body, was designed and built by Renault.

Despite only selling nine of the first generation Espace MPVs the first month of production, new and used Renault Espace MPVs quickly won favour with the public. The Renault Espace is one of Renault's most popular vehicles.

Some secondhand Renault Espace models on the road today are from the second generation phase that ran from 1991 to 1997. Without changing the chassis, Renault retooled and re-skinned the Espace to reflect Renault's signature styling. The third generation took centre stage from 1997 to 2002. These vehicles are a familiar sight at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Transportation Hub.

In 2003, the first all-steel Espace ushered in the fourth generation with a markedly new design.

Now, after achieving sales of 1.2 million on the new Renault Espace in the last 26 years, the new and nearly new Renault Espace models continue to attract buyers with their flexible seating, refined driving experience and luxurious interior.
