A History of the Suzuki Grand Vitara

The Suzuki Grand Vitara is an off-road vehicle produced by Suzuki since 1988. The Grand Vitara is also known in other markets as the Escudo, Sidekick, and Vitara. CAMI Automotive through a joint venture of Suzuki and General Motors also produces the Grand Vitara exclusively in certain countries. The Grand Vitara is sold under various badges worldwide.

The first generation was sold from 1989 to 2006 and was available in SUV and convertible body styles. Local markets adopted the Grand Vitara, including Australia, North America, Spain, Chile and Indonesia, and sold them under different names. In 1993, an update was made. A limited edition Grand Vitara, called the Vitara Rossini with pink exterior and cream leather interior, was also produced.

The second generation Grand Vitara was marketed beginning 1999. This version was larger and more powerful than its predecessor. It was also more expensive. Two facelifts were done to improve market reception. North America withdrew the Grand Vitara from the market in 2003.

The current generation started production in 2005. It carries a GM Theta platform, which it shares with Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent. In 2008, the Grand Vitara was given a facelift including better safety features and updated engines. A facelifted Escudo is expected to come out in 2013.
