Audi has been producing the Audi A3 since 1996, with its first two generations taking its cues from the Volkswagen Group A Platform. Other car models that the Audi A3 shares some similarities with are the Volkwagen Golf, the SEAT Leon, Skoda Ocavia, Seat Toledo, and the Audi TT.

The first generation of the A3 was the company’s response to the diminishing demand for the Audi 50. A four- to five-wheel drive design that had a sportier look was introduced. A three-door hatchback was part of this new model as well. This was the second model to employ the five valves per cylinder feature in its engine.

The second generation was released in 2003 at the Geneva Motor Show. This time it showcased a PQ35 platform as its latest automobile platform. The interior allowed fr more leg room and the engines were fueled by petrol using a Fuel Stratified Injection. By the middle of the same year, two sport designed versions were introduced into the market. These models had a more powerful 3.2 L VR6 engine at 250 PS and a 2.0 Turbo FSI version at 200 PS. Two years later, the S line of the A3 included a three-door version and was made available to North America.
