Bentley Continental History - Click to expand

The Bentley Continental has been around for many years and in many forms. Bentley Continental cars first debuted in 1952. Today, used Bentley Continental cars are prized classics, but when they first came out, the car was designed to pack more power than standard cars. The cars had low chassis that eventually became the hallmark of their look and design.

The Bentley Mark VI Continental came out in 1952. Bentley Continental sales increased when later that year the Bentley R-type Continental came out. This post-war car replaced the Mark VI, as it was basically a larger version of that car. After these two came the Bentley S1 Continental from 1955 to 1959. The S2 followed in 1959 and the S3 in 1962. The S cars were all luxury cars in the Continental line. They represented a true redesign of the Continental. They had V8 engines and independent chassis. The S model sold well and was popular until about 1965, when the T series came along to replace it.

The next innovation in the Continental line came in 1984 with the standard Bentley Continental. The Continental R quickly followed in 1991, the Continental S in 1994 and the Continental T in 1996. The R was large and built for luxury. It was the first of the Bentley Continentals since the S3 back in 1965, which did not share a body with a Rolls-Royce model. It was also the fastest, most expensive and most powerful of the Continentals. Later, the Continental T was a sportier version of the car. More recent Continentals have included the GT in 2003, the Flying Spur in 2005, the GTC in 2006 and the Supersports in 2009.
