Bayerische Motoren Werke or BMW, was founded in 1916 to build engines for aircraft. In 1923 it moved its production to motorbikes and in 1928 began manufacturing cars.
In 1959 the car division struggled but was rescued by the manufacturing rights to the Iso Isetta: a small car fitted with a modified motorbike engine.
BMW cars came to the attention of motor enthusiasts with the 'New Class' range of compact coupes and saloons, with the 1500 version debuting in 1962. These sporty cars, which had little in common with the rest of the BMW range, established the company in the international market.
The main model range includes the 1 Series, the 3 Series and the 5 Series. The 3 Series is a compact executive car, initially produced in 1975. The current flagship 7 series has firmly established BMW as a manufacturer of innovative, stylish and luxury cars. With the F01 starting production in 2008 and the F02 shortly afterwards, this series highlights the technical advances made by the company, including one of the first hydrogen-fuelled cars to enter the mass market.

BMW Sells 110,891 Units in August Worldwide
The BMW Group has announced that 110,891 BMW, Rolls-Royce and MINI vehicles have been sold in August 2011 worldwide, posting the automaker's highest August sales figure ever. Since the start of this year, a total of 1,073,363 vehicles were delivered, a 16.8% increase from the same period of last year.
