A History of the BMW 7 Series
The BMW 7-Series is a line of luxury cars introduced in 1977. This includes several generations of sedan and limousine-type vehicles. The 7-Series is the company’s flagship car, and all models have been at the forefront of the company’s automotive breakthroughs.
The E23 is the first of the 7-Series to be introduced. Production lasted from 1977 to 1986. The next generation was produced in 1986 to 1994. The E32 had a longer body, and was the last of the 7-Series to run exclusively on gasoline.
The 21st century welcomed the continuing production of the third generation, the E38. The E38 made history in automotive manufacture as the first car to sport Xenon headlamps. With the E38, BMW also introduced integrated satellite navigation to the auto industry.
The E65 and E66 are the first in the series to drop automatic transmission. This generation, manufactured in 2001 to 2008, was also the first of BMW’s cars to offer an iDrive system. The iDrive streamlined communication, navigation and other controls into a single system.
The current fifth generation of the 7-Series, the F01 and F02, shines with an intuitive iDrive system and a more efficient gas consumption system. This year, BMW takes their technology a step further with the introduction of 2013 ActiveHybrid 7.
