BMW X5 History - Click to expand
The BMW X5 is a popular luxury edition mid-sized SUV introduced by BMW in 1999. This was BMW's first attempt at a sports utility vehicle, and secondhand BMW X5s are quite popular with growing families looking to enter into the luxury car market.
The first generation of the BMW X5 - the E53 series - was produced between 1999 and 2006, at which point it was replaced by the E70 series. Developed during the time when BMW owned Land Rover, the X5 shares much of the same design and components as the Range Rover HSE: more specifically, the electronics system and the engine. The entertainment system is also identical in both vehicles.
In 2003, BMW introduced a smaller version of the X5, called the X3. The X is used as an indicator of the four wheel drive system.
The second generation E53 series began production in late 2006, and used BMW X5s from this generation feature the iDrive system as standard. There is also an optional third row seat in this generation of the car.
In 2009, a high performance version of the SUV was introduced at the New York Auto Show and BMW X5 M sales began in September of that year. The X5 M features an M power Vu turbo with 555 horsepower and 500 lb-ft torque. These features combined with M dynamic performance control make handling easy.
In 2010, the BMW X5 cars went through some minor aesthetic changes to update its look. This includes a new front bumper, new air intakes and a variety of minor cosmetic changes. However, the model boasts its greatest achievement as a car which produces the lowest emissions of any large 4x4 available.
