The Citroen C2 began production in 2003 as a replacement for the Citroen Saxo. With sleek styling and a smaller body, Citroen aimed squarely at the youth market with this car, and the market responded. Citroen expanded the trim options, and by 2008 there were a total of 10 ongoing trim editions, plus three more limited edition models that were offered only in 2004 and 2007.

The car was updated for the 2008-2009 Citroen C2 sales year. A restyled grille and more Citroen-like front end brought the car more in line with the redesigned C1 and C3. The car also offered five engine options (four petrol and one diesel), and seven different trim levels ranging from the entry level Vibe to the fully-equipped Code. A model is available with start and stop technology, saving even more fuel for the cost-conscious driver. A five-speed semi-automatic transmission provides an electronically controlled manual gearbox that can be operated in either fully automatic mode or a paddle-shift manual mode.
