Honda Civic History - Click to expand
Honda debuted the 2-door, four-passenger, Honda Civic in July 1972, followed by a 3-door hatchback two months later.
The range of Honda Civic cars grew in size and horsepower and 1974 saw the introduction of the 53bhp CVCC engine, along with a five-speed manual gearbox and the first estate car model.
The early 1980s saw the launch of the second generation range of Civics, featuring revamped bodywork and a larger base model engine; all Civic engines now used the CVCC design. The early '80s also saw the debut of the 4-door saloon, along with the sporty Civic S.
Big changes were made in 1984, when the third generation Civic was released. Improvements included increased wheelbase and a 1.5-litre 76bhp engine, while the new sporty 2-seater CRX was also introduced. In 1985 the 91bhp CRX Si was launched and the base CRX was replaced by the CRX HF, which offered improved acceleration over its predecessor.
1988 saw the fourth generation Civic, with revamped bodywork, fuel-injected high-performance engine and a double-wishbone suspension system. The all-new Civic LX Saloon was also introduced in 1988. The fifth-generation Civic debuted three years later, with an attractive aerodynamic body, improved engines and driver's airbags. In 1996, the sixth-generation Civic was unveiled, with larger light clusters, longer body and new grille. A larger, seventh generation, Honda Civic was debuted in 2001, featuring improved interior space, MacPherson strut suspension and Honda's K-Series engine.
2006 saw the biggest facelift yet, as the latest Civic range was released. It had a contemporary, curvaceous exterior and futuristic dashboard design. Despite its reduced internal space this was a highly popular update.
This model range is well known for its fuel-efficiency and reliability; its popularity is obvious, with 16.5 million Honda Civic sales, worldwide, in just over three decades. Amazingly, it has been the best-selling car in Canada for thirteen consecutive years. In addition, the secondhand Honda Civic is renowned for its low rate of depreciation and outstanding reliability.
