Jaguar XJ History - Click to expand

The Jaguar XJ had a long and colourful history. First released in 1968, the XJ, which stood for 'Experimental Jaguar', took the luxury car market by storm, sporting sophisticated leather interiors and power-assisted steering, with some higher range models also offering air-conditioning as an option. The design of this iconic car benefited from the input of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons, making his last personal contribution into the design of one of his company's cars.

The following year, a top of the range Daimler version of Jaguar XJ cars were released, named the Daimler Sovereign; this particular variant being plugged as being "the finest Jaguar ever". Daimler continued this trend throughout the years with various XJ models.

The XJ, a four-door saloon, saw its first major facelift in 1973 with the release of Series II, when an extra engine option was made available. Visually, the model differed only slightly, with raised front bumpers and a smaller grille, improved safety features and an updated interior.

Between 1975 and 1978 some 9,000 two-door XJ coupes were sold, just two years after their initial launch at the 1973 London Motor Show.

After achieving in excess of 90,000 Jaguar XJ sales, Series III was finally launched late in 1979. A number of changes were made to ensure the new range stood out against all the used Jaguar XJ models on the road, including thicker rubber bumpers, flush door handles, which improved safety, an altered grille and a new-look roofline. The list of options was also extended to include a sunroof and cruise control. The Series III XJ saw numerous updates and modifications over the years until it eventually ceased production in 1992.

Throughout the 1990s and into the new millennium, a number of models using the XJ designation were launched, namely the XJ40, XJ81, X300, X305, X308, X350, X358 and the X351, all of which continued to push the boundaries of quality, luxury and class.

Jaguar XF Covers 815 Miles on a Single Tank

British automaker Jaguar proved that its new XF is the most fuel efficient vehicle that they have ever built, as it travelled 815 miles on a single tank, completing an epic journey to Munich from its birthplace at Castle Bromwich in Birmingham. The XF - which was driven by independent tester David Madgwick and accompanied by Alexander Madgwick, a navigator - took in a mix of motorways, winding roads and dense urban traffic when it passed through four different countries.  With...
