Mercedes-Benz is a German car manufacturer, a division of the Daimler Company, which also produces trucks, buses and coaches. Its origins stem from Karl Benz, who created the first car powered by petrol in 1886 and also from Gottlieb Daimler who converted a stagecoach through the addition of a petrol engine in the same year. The first Mercedes car was marketed in 1901. In 1926 the merger of the Benz and Daimler companies resulted in the formation of Daimler-Benz, with the first Mercedes-Benz cars following soon after. The current range of vehicles, such as the A-Class, the C-Class and the S-Class have maintained this reputation.

The company pioneered many features that have gone on to become common in the car industry, from the initial development of internal combustion engine powered vehicles, brakes on all four wheels, the safety cage, traction control and even airbags.
