Mercedes-Benz CL History - Click to expand
In 1997 the CL became a model in its own right after originating as a coupe version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. CL stands for Comfort Leicht, meaning 'comfort light'; the car offers comfort as the S-Class does but in a lighter and sportier coupe package.
The original CL, known as the SEC and S Coupe, followed the hard lines and boxy design of the S-Class very closely between 1992 and 1999, even when it became a model in its own right in 1997. From the very beginning Mercedes-Benz CL cars were built to be powerful, with a choice of V8 or V12 engine.
Much like the S-Class, the CL has often premiered pioneering technology from Mercedes, and second-hand Mercedes-Benz CLs produced between 2000 and 2006 will boast features such as Active Body Control suspension and Bi-Xenon HID lights. As a luxury car the Mercedes-Benz CL offered many high-end features included as standard, for example, climate control, leather upholstery, navigation system and heated front seats. There were also various design packages available in order to customise the car's interior and exterior.
In 2006 the third generation was unveiled and was far sleeker in appearance than previous models. Once again, it sported Mercedes advanced technology, with one version featuring the Distronic Plus cruise-control system of the S-Class. Since the car has always been so technologically advanced, a nearly new Mercedes-Benz CL is likely to have similar technological features as an alternative, brand-new vehicle for the same price.
The CL is a successful and important car because it managed to pave its way as a model in its own right after originating as a version of the S-Class. It also demonstrated that comfort and luxury are not just for large saloon cars, such as the S-Class, but can be experienced along with style and speed in a sporty coupe as well.
