The Mercedes-Benz E-Class vehicles were first introduced over 60 years ago. The range offers executive cars which have since become famous for their comfort and design. So far, there have been over eight generations of the E-Class range.

The 1950s up until the 1980s saw four generations of the E-class range. The W120 Ponton was released in 1953 as a four-door sedan and two-door roadster. In 1958, a new version with a larger engine, the W121 190, was introduced. Both models ran up until 1963, by which time a new line, the W110 Fintail, had already been released. The W110 was produced until 1968, when the W114 and W115 models were introduced. These were a collection of sedans and coupes that offered a three-box design. They were replaced by the W123 in 1976.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class sales were high after the release of the W123 model, with over 2.3 million vehicles being sold before the line ended in 1985. The W124 model followed in 1986, and quickly became successful due to its reliability. When the W124's production run ended in 1996, there was a change in the Mercedes-Benz E-class cars, with the W124's successor, the W210 model, offering more luxury and enhanced features. These changes earned the new model an award in the year of its release when it was voted 'Import Car of the Year' by Motor Trend in 1996.

The later years saw the release of two more generations of the E-Class, with the W211 model being released in 2002, followed by the W212 model in 2009. The W211 was successful, with 1.5 million units being sold. The W212, which was released as saloon, estate, coupe and convertible, has also been well-received, winning a number of awards.
