Mercedes-Benz S-Class Hsitory - Click to expand
Mercedes-Benz S-Class cars were first produced in 1972 as the epitome of a high-end, luxurious vehicle that also put an emphasis on hi-tech safety features. Mercedes has traditionally unveiled all of its innovative safety technology on the S-Class since the original in 1972, which boasted features such as four-wheel independent suspension, improved padding throughout the interior and the option of anti-lock brakes.
In 1979 the new generation was introduced with a more aerodynamic design and a lighter engine that increased its power. Mercedes' patented airbags were first available in this generation of S-Class in 1981, and from 1986 features such as traction control, heated seats and advanced climate control were made available.
Between 1991 and 1999 technology continued to improve. In particular, Mercedes worked on air-suspension technology and unveiled this feature in 1999, along with a navigation system, keyless entry and ignition and cruise control. From 1999 the S-Class became much smaller and lighter once again, with a focus on making the design more elegant.
In 2002 a pre-crash system was developed where the car could detect an imminent crash and prepare for it by tightening seatbelts, raising headrests and adjusting seat positions, in order to reduce injury as much as possible. Mercedes has continued to improve this technology over the years so that the S-Class can now use radar to monitor traffic and brake in dangerous situations. It also has Night View Assistance to make night time driving safer.
The S-Class is a pioneering car as it was the model on which Mercedes showcased its cutting-edge safety technology. Used Mercedes-Benz S-Class cars are likely to feature safety technology that other brand new cars do not have. It has continuously set the standards in car safety across the world, which is an incredible achievement, and is likely to continue raising the bar on car technology into the future.
