Mercedes-Benz History - Click to expand
Mercedes-Benz is a German car manufacturer, a division of the Daimler Company, which also produces trucks, buses and coaches. Its origins stem from Karl Benz, who created the first car powered by petrol in 1886 and also from Gottlieb Daimler who converted a stagecoach through the addition of a petrol engine in the same year. The first Mercedes car was marketed in 1901. In 1926 the merger of the Benz and Daimler companies resulted in the formation of Daimler-Benz, with the first Mercedes-Benz cars following soon after. It is the oldest car brand still in existence. Over the years, the company has introduced a range of innovations, both technical and safety related, into the range of Mercedes-Benz cars, which quickly became common in other manufacturers' cars. In 1958 an alliance with Studebaker-Packard of the USA allowed the export of its cars into the huge North American market. The company's reputation for quality and durability helped make used Mercedes-Benz extremely desirable cars until the late 1990's. Some of the more famous models in the range include the 300SL sports car, which had upward 'gull-wing' opening doors. It also incorporated the first crumple zone body design to help keep the occupants from harm in the event of an accident. In 1963, the 600 Model pioneered the concept of air suspension in a vehicle. All of these innovations helped Mercedes-Benz sales remain high throughout its existence. The current range of vehicles, such as the A-Class, the C-Class and the S-Class have maintained this reputation. It is perhaps for its innovations that Mercedes-Benz is best known. The company pioneered many features that have gone on to become common in the car industry, from the initial development of internal combustion engine powered vehicles, brakes on all four wheels, the safety cage, traction control and even airbags. All these factors make even a second hand Mercedes-Benz a reliable car that you can trust.
