Mitsubishi Lancer History - Click to expand
The Mitsubishi Lancer is largely related to the Colt and was originally marketed as the Colt Lancer in Europe from 1973. The Lancer is a much bigger vehicle than the Colt and is essentially the four-door family saloon version of the Colt hatchback. The original engine sizes available on the first generation were 1.2L, 1.4L and 1.6L.
In 1980 a Lancer EX was made available; this was a sportier car with a turbo-charged, fuel-injected engine, which made it more powerful and also more fuel-efficient. However, in 1982 when the Lancer was redesigned again it became less sporty and once again focused on being a family car. The third and fourth generations remained largely unchanged in style and it wasn't until 1988 that Mitsubishi Lancer cars got a new look, becoming rounder, more aerodynamic and more stylish.
Used Mitsubishi Lancers can be found in a number of different styles with different engines. Until now there have been nine generations of the Lancer, each one with different styling tweaks and available in different forms. The most popular Mitsubishi Lancer sales in the UK are of the saloon version although the Lancer is also available as an estate car. Since the car has been marketed across the world it often goes under different names or is available with different engines, according to the fuel efficiency legislations of different countries; however, the main chassis will always remain largely the same across the world, which is a testament to the versatility of the Mitsubishi Lancer.
The Lancer has achieved impressive sales worldwide. Changes in design over the years mean there are different versions of the car to suit different tastes. For example, nearly new Mitsubishi Lancers may appeal to a young market due the sporty and aggressive design of the newer generation. However, the main reason the Lancer is so popular is because it is spacious, comfortable and affordable, and therefore appeals to the masses.
