The Mitsubishi Shogun is a full-size SUV marketed since 1982. The Shogun, more known as the Pajero and Montero worldwide, is currently on its fourth generation of production. The Shogun is a successful motorsport vehicle, raced starting 1983. A top contender in the Dakar Rally, the vehicle is one of the most successful off-roaders in the history of the auto industry. Its known competitors include the Land Rover Discovery and the Toyota Land Cruiser.

The concept behind the Shogun was first introduced at the 1973 Tokyo Motor Show. Mitsubishi aimed to create a more recreational SUV. The first generation made waves in 1982, showcasing technology and features that were the first to appear in its segment. The second generation Shogun was produced between 1991 and 1999, and was better restyled to better cater to urban drivers. This version had a larger body, and options were available for various engines, wheelbase and body styles.

The third generation was produced from 1999 to 2006, complete with new interior and exterior upgrades. A mid-production facelift was made in 2003 to compete with the Land Rover and Toyota. Worldwide market for the third generation was staggered. In 2006, the Shogun was completely pulled from the US market. The fourth generation was unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show.
