Mitsubishi Shogun History - Click to expand
The Mitsubishi Shogun is one of the most popular models in Mitsubishi's range of four-wheel drive and sports utility vehicles. The first model of this vehicle, known as the Pajero, made history for the company by coming first in the Paris-Dakar Rally on only its third entry in the race. Mitsubishi Shogun sales still benefit from the reputation it earned as a result of this win.
The earliest model - released in 1982 - was more of a true off-road vehicle than today's models - the original version had a shortened wheelbase, three doors and was available with a cloth top as an option. A turbocharged diesel engine gave the vehicle extra performance capabilities not seen before in Japanese cars, boosting popularity across the globe and helping the four-wheeler establish itself as a rallying classic. Not just an off-road vehicle, it included many of the comforts of saloon cars such as power steering and suspension seats. These inclusions were highly influential in developing the four-wheel drive market as we know it today.
Through the 1980s and early 90s Mitsubishi refined the design to broaden the appeal of the model; modifications such as adding more passenger doors and lengthening the wheelbase to accommodate passenger amenities helped to establish the brand in the family car market. The car was renamed the Mitsubishi Shogun for its introduction into the UK market, and is still sold under that name in the UK today. Mitsubishi Shogun sales peaked in the mid '90s and have remained relatively high since then.
The latest generation of the Mitsubishi Shogun was released in 2006, and continues the model's tradition of success and ruggedness with a high ground clearance, great build quality, traction control and controlled brake-force distribution. Nearly new Mitsubishi Shoguns include a powerful new sound system. Secondhand Mitsubishi Shoguns are a great buy, owing to the durability of this legendary and influential vehicle.
