Nissan Almera Origins - Click to expand
The Nissan Almera was launched towards the end of 1995 to replace the Nissan Sunny, a popular car which had been in existence for almost thirty years. The Almera was advertised as 'The car they don't want you to drive.'
Chronology
The earliest Almera (manufactured between 1995 and 1998) had power steering, driver airbag, electric mirrors and stereos as standard. They were available with 1.4l and 1.6l petrol engines. In 1996 Nissan brought out the 2.0l (diesel) version with better suspension, a faster steering rack, front and rear strut braces, BMW style side skirts and front/back splitters
Between 1998 and 2000 a new design was launched, with a new style of front bumper. The body kits were made to be stronger than the earlier brittle plastic use on earlier Nissan Almera cars.
In 2000 a new generation was launched. The car had a smoother profile with curved lines. With better handling, tyre grip and overall drive capabilities, this version continued the trend of impressive Nissan Almera sales. It was slightly smaller for rear passengers but had a larger boot and was available in 3 door, 5 door hatchback or 4 door saloon. The engines were 1.5l or 1.8l petrol engines or a 2.2 litre injection turbodiesel.
In 2003 a new version was launched with a modified style of bodywork and interior, improved suspension (making it quieter and more controllable after an emergency manoeuvre) and the latest engine type. The diesel version became available with a 6 speed gearbox, making it faster. CD players and GPS were also new features.
Although Nissan Almera sales had been impressive across the world, production of the car ceased in November 2006.
Achievements and Benefits
Nissan Almera cars are regarded to be reliable and well built cars and so a second-hand Nissan Almera is often an affordable car with quality and reliability assured. The best fuel economy is offered by the 2.2 litre diesel, but it is true to say all perform well.
