The Nissan Primera was launched during the autumn of 1990 to replace Nissan's first UK built car, the Bluebird. Like the Bluebird, Nissan Primera cars were manufactured in England, and were targeted at the European market.

Chronology

The Primera was launched in 1990 as a 4 or 5 door saloon with front wheel drive, a 5 speed manual gearbox (an automatic was available for some versions) with a 1.6l and 2.0l petrol engine (a 1.8l engine was available, but not in Europe). In 1992 a 2.0l diesel engine version went on sale, with multilink suspension.

In 1993 a series II model was launched with anti-lock brakes, fuel injection and side impact protection as standard. The following year the Series III was launched with driver airbags as standard and a new chrome grille.

In 1995 a second generation was launched in Japan and went on sale in Europe the following year. An estate model was launched in Europe in 1998.

In 1999 a more stylish range replaced what critics had called a bland design. New features included a modern front end with clear style headlights.

In 2001 the more stylish third generation was launched, with a sleek shape and classy interior.

New equipment in the form of rear parking cameras and satnavs as standard on all but entry level versions was introduced in 2004.

Manufacture of the Primera ceased in 2008. By this time Nissan Primera sales had been for export, none had been available for UK sales after 2006.
