Porsche 911 History - Click to expand
The Porsche 911 is a luxury brand sports car produced by the German car manufacturer Porsche AG. Designs for the 911 date back to 1959 when they were just a series of sketches by Ferdinand Porsche. The Porsche 911 was developed to replace the Porsche 356, the first model of car produced by Porsche. Bigger and more powerful, the 911 It made its first appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, but at that time was designated as the Porsche 901. The name was later changed to Porsche 911 when it was found that the French car manufacturer, Peugeot, has exclusive rights to car names of three numbers with a zero in the middle.
Porsche 911 sales have put this model at the forefront of the luxury sports car market since it was first introduced. Porsche has continually developed and released new and improved versions of the model throughout its long production history. Although it has been continually subjected to development as it has moved through the ever-changing landscape of car design, the Porsche 911 retains its original basic design concept. As well as being developed for the domestic sales market, the 911 has been continually modified for racing teams, and as a result has become one of the most successful racing cars in history.
The Porsche 911 has featured prominently on various 'top sports car' lists throughout its production history. It was named as the 'Top Sports Cars of the 1960s' and 'Top Sports Cars of the 1970s'by the magazine Sports Car International, as well as achieving fifth place in the international poll for 'Car of the Century'. The Porsche 911 is a sought after classic car, and the demand for used Porsche 911 models can sometimes be as high as for the newest range.
