Suzuki Ignis History - Click to expand
Suzuki Ignis cars first appeared in the UK in the year 2000 in a jeep-like hatchback format. The Suzuki Ignis later evolved into a range of subcompact estate vehicles. However, these were discontinued in 2008.
Initially Suzuki offered British drivers a perky 82bhp 1.3 litre petrol engine in a compact offroad-style with a choice of two interior trims - the entry-level GA or the GL, which had added extras, such as central locking and alloy wheels. Many felt the drab interior and lack of kit let the car down somewhat.
As a result, the Suzuki Ignis was revised in 2003 when a 1.5 litre 99bhp petrol engine was added. Buyers now had a choice of a manual four-wheel drive with improved GL trim, which now included central locking, CD player, ABS airbags and electric front windows; or an automatic front-wheel drive model with a GLX interior with added air conditioning and alloy wheels.
In 2000, Suzuki introduced an estate car version which proved insightful, given that several other car manufacturers followed suit some years later. These cars came in a choice of manual 94bhp 1.3 litre or automatic 99bhp 1.5 litre engines with variable valve timing (VVT). The latter also came with a 4x4 (4Grip) option, but was heavy on fuel. These lasted until 2008. However, the entire line was discontinued.
In 2003, in an attempt to capture some of the 'hot hatch' market, Suzuki introduced an Ignis Sport with optional body kit, lowered suspension, sporty exhaust and gearbox fitted onto a 3-door body. The 1.5 110bhp engine was also a little racier. Suzuki Ignis Sport sales did not perform as well as hoped against competitors, and the model was ditched in 2005.
Today, nearly new Suzuki Ignis' are virtually impossible to find, but 1.3GL second hand Suzuki Ignis hatchbacks tend to sell well in the used car market.
