The Toyota Avensis, a large family car, is produced in Derbyshire, UK. Production has been based in the United Kingdom since the model's debut. Succeeding the Toyota Carina E, it is available as a 4-door saloon, a 5-door hatchback and an estate. The Japanese manufacturer makes a separate large MPV called the Toyota Avensis Verso, also known as the Ipsum and the Picnic in other markets. The new and nearly new Toyota Avensis is the precursor for the youth-marketed Scion tC in the United States.

The Toyota Avensis advanced in technology, power, size and economy over the generations of production. The original version offered four different engines and three body styles. It was based on the dull but serviceable Corona/Carina model but with sportier exterior and more interior luxuries. In 2000, the Toyota Avensis underwent a facelift but retained its excellent reliability, comfortable interior, smooth ride, refinement and solid build quality.

The second generation and the most popular of today's used Toyota Avensis had more visual appeal and different versions of the turbo-diesel engines went out into models destined for worldwide destinations.

Changes were made to the Toyota Avensis cars in 2006 and turn signals were incorporated into side mirrors, an updated audio system with MP3 players was installed and the new interior materials complemented the height-adjustable front passenger seat, the optitron display and on-board computer.

The Paris Motor Show was the site for the unveiling of the latest generation of Toyota Avensis in 2008.

The Toyota Avensis won 4th place in the 2004 European Car of the Year contest and took top honours in Australia's Best People Mover. It is currently the largest Toyota saloon sold in Europe.
