Toyota Hiace History - Click to expand
The Toyota Hiace was first introduced in 1967 as a cab-over commuter vehicle as well as a pick-up and delivery van. Since the introduction of the first generation Hiace, it has been manufactured in a wide range of configurations including ambulances, mini-buses, minivans, pick-ups, taxis, and vans. The first generation (H10) was manufactured between 1967 and 1977, the second generation (H20, 30, and 40) from 1977-82, the third generation (H50) from 1982-89, the fourth generation (H100) from 1989 to 2004, and the fifth and most current generation (H200) went into production in 2004.
Today, it is difficult to find any nearly new Toyota Hiaces or secondhand Toyota Hiaces as they are very scarce or still in use by the original and subsequent owners. This is especially true with the first three generations and up to the later models of the fourth generation. For over four decades, the primary focus has been utility so not much has changed other than the normal technological upgrades which are common to all vehicle manufacturers. Both the Commuter and the van had facelifts in 1989 when they were re-designed. However, the Hiace pick-up was not that fortunate and was eventually discontinued in the mid 90's.
Noticeable accomplishments and upgrades include a dash-mounted gear changer for both the automatic and manual transmissions, as well as the newer, wide-bodied Super Long Wheelbase (SWLB). Both of these features are expected to result in increased Toyota Hiace sales. The length of the cargo floor was increased by virtue of the engine being moved forward by 20 mm, door openings have been widened, and the driver's seat area now has additional storage space. Additionally, there are more transmission options including a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual, and improved fuel efficiency to combat ever-increasing petrol prices.
