Toyota Land Cruiser History - Click to expand
The Land Cruiser is the Jeep-like vehicle manufactured by Toyota. The development of the Land Cruiser began in 1951 and it first went into production three years later. In addition to its normal SUV format, it has been manufactured as a utility truck, estate car, hardtop, and convertible in the past. Its longevity and reliability has made it an extremely popular vehicle. Additionally, the Land Cruiser is Australia's most popular selling full-size, body-on-frame, four-wheel drive vehicle and is tested extensively in the Outback. Even a secondhand Land Cruiser is a desirable choice for an additional vehicle.
During the Korean War, there was a considerable demand for a light utility vehicle for the military, so the US Government ordered 100 Jeeps and asked the Toyota Corporation to manufacture them. In 1951, the Jeep BJ prototype went into production. It had a 6-cyclinder, 3.4 litre engine and was larger than the original Jeep built by the US. In 1965, global production of the Land Cruiser exceeded 50,000. By 1973, Land Cruiser sales had exceeded 300,000. After the BJ series came the FJ, followed by the 20 series, then the 40 through to the 100 series, and in 2008 production began on the 200 series.
The Land Cruiser has won several notable awards between 1998 and 2001. It received the 4x4 of the Year Award from 1998 through 2000 by "Australian 4WD Monthly" Magazine. It also won the 4WD Wagon of the Year Award by "Bushdriver" Magazine. Finally, in 2001, it won the 4WD of the Year Award by "4x4 Australia" Magazine. Based on its overall performance in all types of climates and on all types of terrain, it is no surprise that it is so popular worldwide and why nearly new Land Cruisers are popular items on used car lots.
