Volvo S40 sales have been reasonable around the world. A considerable amount has been sold in the United States, with around 25,000 being sold in both 2005 and 2006 after the second-generation version was introduced. There was a minor update to the car in 2008, with a better audio system, more storage space, and improved safety features being introduced.

The Volvo S40 has a distinctive design, which has won it many awards. In an Italian award ceremony, it was voted as the 'Most Beautiful Estate Car in the World'. It was also voted the Best New Sport Compact in 2005 at the Canadian Car of the Year Awards.
