Volvo V70 History - Click to expand
The Volvo V70 was first manufactured in 1996. It is a medium-sized estate car. It has now gone through three iterations and Volvo V70 sales remain strong. Its initial design was based on the earlier Volvo 850. The naming system Volvo adopted at this time reflects the size and body style of the vehicle. The 'V' stands for versatile, the car being a type of station wagon.
The car's design was more rounded than the earlier 850, which had many square edges, as is customary with most modern makes of car. There is a range of Volvo V70 cars available. The available trims included a sports trim, with alloy wheels, fog lamps and a rear spoiler. Another trim was named after the factory that first produced the car, and was called Torslanda. There were several different engines capabilities produced, from the basic 2.0-litre petrol engine to the 2.5-litre diesel engine.
At the end of 1999, the second generation of the Volvo V70 was launched. This model was based on the P2 platform, featuring a much curvier design. Peter Horbury, the acclaimed car designer who has worked for both Ford and Volvo during his career, designed this new version. In the United States there is an all-wheel drive available.
In 2007, the third and current generation of the car came to the market. It was positioned to be more upmarket than previous versions. It is only available as a front-wheel drive.
Having created and survived three design generations, it is safe to say that Volvo V70 cars are going to remain around for some time. Supported by Euro NCAP safety evaluations and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a second-hand Volvo V70 is a good purchase, especially with Volvo's commitment to safety making these cars very reliable and practical.
