VW Polo Buyers Guide

The VW Polo is a car that is confident on the road and great to drive. This supermini has a long history of production, with 40 years of fine-tuning to ultimately reach its current condition. The VW is now on its 5th generation, and the current Polo is also known as the Mk 5. The Polo enjoys widespread recognition and trust in the segment, rivaling the best cars in the class with exceptional vitality.

Pros

What’s great about Polo is it’s very economical, and the engines prove this. The choices for engines include 6 petrol variants and 2 diesels. Most notable are the 1.2 petrol, 1.2 diesel and 1.6 diesel turbocharged which give a powerful pull. The steady engines coupled with balanced suspension gives passengers a comfortable and smooth ride. Outside noise is also at a minimum.

Driver comfort is unmatched by other cars in the segment. The dash controls are very visible and clear, and they are arranged in a highly logical manner, making the car user-friendly. The seating and steering wheel are also adjustable to suit the driver’s preference. The cabin is spacious, and all-around visibility is assured.

Buyers of the Polo will also be drawn to the car’s interior design, which is classy and almost luxurious compared to its more careless competitions. The plastics are soft and dense, bringing an air of value to the dashboard. The security features of the car are also pretty adequate. Polo scored a good grade for adult safety in the Euro NCAP crash test.

The biggest strength of the Polo is its price and running cost. Some of its competitors can easily be forgotten because of the accessibility of the Polo to buyers despite budget constraints. Although the petrol may cost extra to run, the diesel engines are extremely economical and affordable in the long run. The Polo is available in a number of trims.

Cons

While the engines are admirable for their efficiency, they don’t exactly deliver the oomph that other cars in the segment bring into the table. Comfort may be delivered, but an ample amount of body lean can still be felt when the Polo corners and the steering is changeable. Passengers may also feel a few bumps on the road, but not so much as to cause discomfort. In addition, while the Polo succeeds in muffling wind and road noise, some engines can cause a racket, especially the diesel variants. Vibrations can also be felt in the cabin.

Passengers on the rear seats of the Polo may feel a bit cramped in long rides. The boot isn’t amazing, but is adequate for most uses. The standard security kit of the Polo is fewer than some of the car’s top competition: stability control and front and side airbags. Curtain airbags are only available as an add-on to the car.

VW Polo invests in two things: simplicity and economy. While the car targets a specific type of market, buyers of the Polo will be guaranteed a good, comfortable ride that is reliable for everyday use.

A History Of The VW Polo

If you are planning on purchasing your very first car, one of the first choices you would have to consider should be the VW Polo. The Polo is a car produced by the German automobile manufacturing brand, Volkswagen. It is a car with quite a history, as it first made its debut back at 1975. Since it first appeared, it has gone through 4 generation changes, with 5 generations in total, and even a few “facelifts”, or modifications and changes during the generations. It has won various awards (7 major ones) including the Car Of The Year Award back at 1995 and 1996.

The VW Polo is classified as a supermini, or more commonly known as a B-Segment. However, it does not only come in its B-Segment type, as it is retailed in coupé, hatchback, and other alternative car model types. The Polo essentially based its body build from a number of other cars manufactured by other automobile manufacturers. One of the closest models the Polo was designed and developed after was the Audi 50, also a B-Segment hatchback which was introduced back at 1974. From this car model, along with many others in which the Polo was developed after, it has become one of the most popular and wanted superminis out ther on the market today.
