WhatGas

If you are sick of paying over the odds for your fuel, then WhatGas is an app you should certainly download. This app will use your smartphone or mobile data connected tablet's GPS chip to find the petrol stations closest to you with the cheapest fuel prices. Whether your vehicle takes diesel, petrol, or LPG, this app will help you save money. Data is created by users of the app, so if you have any updated prices, upload them to help the community of WhatGas users!

I have made this our number one recommended app as I've personally saved £27 a month by using it!

MapsWithMe Pro

Traditionally, satellite navigation has been hindered by connectivity. If you have a poor connection then your sat nav might stop navigating altogether. This is a particular problem in cities with large buildings and in rural areas. Thankfully, there is a way around it - offline navigation with MapsWithMe Pro. This app costs £2.99 on iTunes and £3.99 on Google Play, and it's an excellent solution for drivers who are always on-the-go that need to be navigated through tricky areas. Simply put in your destination and this app will do the rest!

RAC Traffic

If your job involves time-based deliveries or if you simply want to avoid traffic on your next spirited drive, RAC Traffic is a great app to download on your smartphone. This app displays live traffic hotspots and traffic information throughout the UK, and uses Google Maps to warn you of any hotspots you might encounter on your journey. This app is free on all platforms so get downloading!

AA Parking

Finding a good car park in areas you're not familiar with can be a nightmare. Thankfully, AA Parking solves this issue and the company even claim you'll never have to worry about finding cost-effective and safe parking ever again. This app covers all free and paid car parks in the UK and Ireland, and in some areas there's a real-time option for parking space availability, with opening / closing hours and up to date ticket prices.

CamerAlert

We don't condone speeding here at Autoweb, but it's safe for us to say that sometimes, drivers just get caught out! CamerAlert is a free app on iPhone and Android that is a speed camera and red light camera warning system. It gathers information and data from Pocket GPS World and gives drivers a reliable heads-up about any cameras in the area.

Find My Car

Find My Car is the most accurate app of its type. This app uses your GPS chip to make a note of where you park your car and then it'll direct you back to it when you need it to. It will direct you right to your driver's door, so long as you pinpoint your cars position from there. This app is particularly useful in towns and cities if you park on the street. Just remember to log your vehicles position, otherwise the app is pointless!

TopCashBack

A cashback app might seem out of place on our list of the top 11 handy smartphone apps, but don't be too hasty - in a world where fuelling costs and insurance costs are rising, motorists should be looking to save as much money in as many places as possible. This app is the best of its type, and will give you money-saving vouchers and discounts to use online and offline. For motorists, these currently include £70 cashback on an insurance policy from Aviva and 21% cashback on new listings on Auto Trader.

TomTom UK and Ireland

TomTom U.K & Ireland is the best paid satellite navigation app on iPhone and Android. This app offers all of the functionality of the top-end TomTom sat nav's but in your phone, and it has excellent reviews from its users, including me. The app costs £23.99 on Android (currently on sale) and £39.99 on iTunes, which is a small price to pay compared to a dedicated satellite navigation system, which can cost anywhere from £60 - £300. Just remember to keep your phone charged!

AutoGuard Blackbox

Crash for cash and other insurance scams are becoming more common. So how can you protect yourself? The best way is with a dedicated dashboard camera, but the second best way is with an app like AutoGuard Blackbox. This free app on Android transforms your smartphone into a dash cam and takes pictures and records video whilst you're driving. It records various lengths of video, acceleration, latitude, altitude, and speed, and the time and date to protect you in the event of a claim.

Intelligent Marmalade

If you're a young driver, then I'm sure you will heard all about telematics or 'black box' technology. Well, a new app from Marmalade has been released to introduce young drivers to this technology. The app records driving characteristics. It's completely free, and worth a punt if you are considering black box technology in your next insurance premium. Use this app to see whether telematics is right for you. If you drive hard, telematics isn't for you!

MyCars

My Cars is an expense tracking app. This is the best app of its type for managing and tracking your various expenses related to motoring, with helpful features such as a fuel logger, efficiency program and maintenance recorder. You can also update your insurance costs and parking costs. This app is only as effective as the data you record, but if you're one for noting your outgoings, this app will appeal to you greatly.
