Whether it is rugged mountains or beachside drives, the UK is filled with beautiful scenery that is perfect for a UK road trip. Many think road trips are just for the summer, but even in the winter, there are some stunning locations that are not to be missed, come rain or shine.
If you are looking for a beautiful coastline on the eastern side of the country, Norfolk is a perfect option for a quiet and tranquil drive. Norwich has a great buzz if you are looking for a slightly busier and fast-paced activity, but if you drive slightly east, you can experience the beauty of The Broads. The scenic waterways and rich wildlife are completely worth exploring for an extra couple of days during a UK road trip.
If you are looking for a complete “Instagram ready” location, there are a few perfect stops along the way in Norfolk. These include Norfolks red and white Happisburgh lighthouse which is a beautiful detour for a road trip. A quick top tip, if you are wishing to avoid the crowds, Great Yarmouth and Cromer can get quite busy during peak season, so it is best to plan your seasonal trips accordingly.
If you are looking for a Scottish adventure, there are a few road trip routes that are both beautiful as well as popular. The North Coast 500 route starts in the picturesque Inverness where you can explore the remote corners of northern Scotland with white sandy beaches and rocky mountains at your disposal. There are also some excellent hiking spots along the 500 route including Ben Hope which is the most northern Munro in Scotland. Along this route, you can also drive down to some stunning beaches such as Sandwood Bay and pass historic sites including Dunrobin Castle.
The southwest has some beautiful hidden gems that are always worth a stop during a UK road trip. The A39 is one of the longest roads in southwest England that connects Bath and Falmouth. For the perfect southwest road trip, there is a particularly picturesque spot between Barnstable in Devon and Newquay in Cornwall. Newquay is often voted the brits favourite seaside town, and is perfect if you are on a family trip with children. Top tip for the Southwest is to avoid the A39 during peak holiday times as the traffic can pile up and be a very slow journey.
Arguably one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, the Lake District offers stunning scenery from large hills to glass flat lakes. Wandsworth country is known for its picturesque roads and is a perfect trip to include in your UK road trip. You can stop off and go for a hike, or a dip in the lakes. If you want a slight break from driving along your trip, The Lake District has many scenic railway routes that you can follow and jump on and off as you please, taking in all the lakes have to offer. Top tip for the Lake District is if you are planning on stopping off and doing a spot of hiking, a favourite amongst walkers is to stock up on Kendal Mint Cakes. They are perfect for energy boosting on long walks up hill.
Head over to Wales and explore by the best way, which is to drive along the coast. The A470 runs all the way from Cardiff, down through The Dragons Spine, taking in glorious scenes in two national parks. Road tripping on this route will have you stopping off at Llyn Clywedog reservoir and the picturesque market town straight out of a story book, Dolgellau. Finish your trip up at Snowdonia and enjoy the stunning views after a days hiking.
