Renault Trafic

The Renault Trafic is the signature vehicle for the company's light van range and exists in several different versions, under joint agreements between Renault and other car manufacturers. Introduced in 1980, it remained in production with limited engineering changes. Possibly the first light commercial vehicle ever made with a raked front façade, the Renault Trafic features a panel van design engineered by Renault and its partner General Motors.

Nissan builds some versions at its Nissan plant in Barcelona and sells the Trafic as the Primastar. It is also sold as the Vauxhall and the Opel Vivaro through Renault and General Motors. The Vivaro, the Primastar and the Trafic are built at GMM Luton in the United Kingdom.

New and secondhand Renault Trafics come in a variety of styles, from a 9-seater van down to a 3-seater with available rear loading space. The first versions rolled out of the plants in the 1980s and during their lifetime have undergone several cosmetic makeovers, including a minor facelift in 2006 when clear indicators were installed and the orange ones swapped out.

Interestingly, new and nearly new Renault Trafic models were popular choices for conversion to motor coaches, especially in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Models converted like the Rapport and the Romance still command great prices today for used Renault Trafics.

After the first 18 years, Renault radically changed the appearance of the Trafic and brought it more in line with Renault styling and design. New engines became available and they outfitted some models with 1.9 turbo diesels or a 2.5 16-valve engines. The Trafic is available with an optional sliding side door, twin-hinged rear door or a tailgate, two separate payloads and two body lengths.

The Renault Trafic has won numerous awards including the British Insurance Vehicle Security Award in the Heavy Commercial Vehicles category.
